Food allergies can be stressful—for both kids and parents. The good news is that there are multiple treatment options, and no single “right” choice for everyone. Our goal is to help families choose the option that best fits their child’s needs, comfort level, and lifestyle.
Oral Food Immunotherapy (OIT)
OIT helps children, 12 months and older, become less sensitive to a food allergy by slowly introducing very small amounts of the allergenic food. Over time, this can help reduce the risk of a serious reaction if the food is eaten by accident.
This option is best for families who are comfortable with daily dosing and regular office visits, and who are looking for stronger protection and desire to potentially eat their allergen freely.
Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
SLIT is a gentler option for those over 5 years old, that uses tiny liquid drops placed under the tongue instead of eating the food. Because the doses are much smaller, SLIT tends to have fewer reactions, but it also offers a lower level of protection than OIT.
This may be a good choice for families who want a less intense approach or whose child is not ready to eat the allergenic food.
Xolair® (Omalizumab)
For families who prefer not to use food exposure at all, Xolair is an injectable medication (approved for 12 months and older) that helps calm the body’s allergic response. It works by lowering IgE levels—the antibodies responsible for allergic reactions.
Xolair does not involve eating the allergenic food and can be administered in or out of the office. It can help reduce the risk and severity of reactions from accidental exposure and may be used alone or, in some cases, alongside immunotherapy.
Choosing What’s Right for Your Child
Every child and family is different. During a consultation, our providers will review your child’s allergy history, test results, and overall health to help you decide whether OIT, SLIT, Xolair, or continued avoidance is the best fit.
